Day 1 arrival Srinagar
You arrive in the capital of Kashmir, Srinagar, idyllically situated on the Dal lake. The lake is covered in water lilies and lotus flowers. And of course you will sleep in one of the cozy houseboats on the lake. Srinagar is by airplane or car easily accessible from the Indian capital New Delhi. Kashmir has been an area of conflict between India and Pakistan for a long time, since both countries have divided the original Kashmir. In recent years it has become calmer again and travelers have returned to this region, which is known as one of the finest in India
Day 2 Srinagar
These days you can explore Srinagar and surroundings. The day will begin with getting up early to visit the floating markets on the Dal lake by boat. After you will visit the Moghul gardens, culminating with the Shalimar and Nishat gardens. Another magnificent place is the Shankaracharya Hill with a Hindu temple. Wander through the old city and visit the Jami Masjid mosque. You can also visit the former summer palace of the Maharaja.
Day 3 Srinagar - Kargil
Today there is a long journey ahead of you. It's approximately an 8 hour drive to Kargil. Kargil has a predominantly Muslim population, especially Shia, which shows the relationship with the nearby Baltisan (Pakistan). You will travel further and further into the mountains to arrive at a higher altitude. The green nature of Kashmir is replaced by rugged mountains where no trees grow.
Day 4 Kargil - Rangdum
You will travel in the direction of Zanskar and stay on the route in a tent camp near Rangdum. Along the way you will visit small villages and enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery. The population in this region bordering on Pakistan is predominantly Muslim. In Rangdum visit the Rangdum gompa.
Day 5 Rangdum - Padum
A spectacular mountain trail takes you into the closed-off Zanskar. Here you will cros the Pensi La pass (4450 m) as well. The beautiful valley of Zanskar is only a few months per year accessible (in the summer) because of rough winters and is thus totally isolated from the rest of the world. You will stay in a simple hotel in the town of Padum, because the following days you will visit the most important monasteries in the area.
Day 6 Padum / visit Karcha and Sani
The following days you will visit the various monasteries of Zanskar valley. Today you will visit the monasteries of Karcha and Sani. One of the oldest monasteries in Zanskar is Sani, about 10 kilometers outside of Padum. This monastery dates back to the 8th century.
Day 7 Padum / visit Stongde and Zangla
Today you will visit the monasteries of Stongde and Zangla. The monastery of Stongde dates back to the 11th century and includes seven temples.
Day 8 Padum / visit Bardan and Mune
One of the most spectacularly situated monasteries is Bardan, built on a steep mountainside. Another monastery we will visit is the small monastery of Mune.
Day 9 Padum - Kargil
This will be a very long day of traveling to Kargil. The long journey takes about 13 hours, so you will have to get up early. On the road you will be able to enjoy the scenery.
Day 10 Kargil - Lamayuru
You are traveling to the small town of Lamayuru, set in a magnificent moonscape. You can visit the monastery and a cave dating back to the 10th century where Buddhist teacher Naropa, teacher of Milarepa, is said to have meditated for years. For the best view of the area you can climb to the stupa high up on the mountain. The town itself is small and quiet. Women sit together on their pavements, turning their prayer wheels. Boys chase their goats and cattle in the mountains. Depending on the season the surrounding fields are processed in the valley. Lamayuru is also a starting point for many treks in the area.
Day 11 Lamayuru - Alchi via Rizong
Continue the trip to Alchi, the oldest monastery of Ladakh, from the 11th century. Along the way we will visit the first monastery of Rizong. A beautiful convent from 1840, where the monks still  keep a conservative regime. The Alchi monastery is no longer in use as a monastery, but now it serves as a museum. Together with the Tabo Monastery in Spiti this is one of the most remarkable monasteries in this region. It has the same mix of Buddhist and Moghul styled murals. Through small doors with high thresholds you will enter small rooms where the walls are painted from head to toe. The imposing statues stand in the middle of the room. In one of the six temples are three large, imposing images of Vajrapani, Manjushri and a draft of the Maitreya Buddha. To be able to see all the colorful paintings a good flashlight is necessary!
Day 12 Alchi - Leh via Likir
En route to Leh you will first visit the monastery of Likir. The monks of this monastery run Alchi as well. The clay sculptures and frescos in the temples of Likir date back to the 13th century. Outside the monastery is an enormous, modern Buddha image, gold and shimmering towering above the monastery. In the monastery is a school where boys are trained to become a monk. Leh is situated at 3500 meters altitude in the western Indian Himalayas. Ladakh is also known as "Little Tibet" because the nature, culture and language matches Tibet before the Chinese invaded it. Leh was once the centre of the trade routes in Central Asia and is now the capital of Ladakh. It's a small, cozy place with many hotels, restaurants, shops and markets. The local women sell their vegetables on the sidewalk of the main street, some still do so while wearing the striking high headdress typical for Ladakh.
Day 13 Leh
Leh was once the centre of trade routes in Central Asia and is currently the capital of Ladakh, a busy place full of hotels, restaurants and shops. In the centre of Leh are three ancient stupas. On a hill in the middle of Leh nearby the old palace in ruins, past the royal Tsemo Gompa monastery there is a structure houses a beautiful two-story-Chamba image of Buddha. You can explore Leh on  your own or explore some monasteries in the valley.

For example you could visit one of the following monasteries: Mathomonastery which is a small monastery of a small order, where a luncheon ceremony is held every day at 12 am that you are allowed to attend. This monastery ,dated back to the sixteenth century, is less well known and therefore less touristy. It belongs to the rare Sakyapa sect and the monks take the time to show you around. Stakna Gompa, means "the nose of the tiger” and is Drukpa- order. There are many ancient prayer rooms and it has a special silver stupa. Stick is a beautiful palace where the royal family lives and houses a very nice museum open to the public.

Hemis is the wealthiest and largest monastery in Ladakh. The monastery is filled with golden statues and stupas, inlaid with semiprecious stones. This monastery was built four hundred years ago as an imitation of the Potala Palace in Lhasa.

You can also visit the monastery of Thikse, situated on a hill. The monastery consists of twelve floors. It is eight hundred years old, consists of many ancient temples and is inhabited by sixty monks. The most famous Buddha image of Ladakh, the Maitreya Buddha (the Buddha of the Future) is situated here..
Day 14 departure Leh
You leave Leh. Would you like to fly back to Delhi? Or continue on your journey towards Manali country or Spiti?
